Abstract In this paper, a simplified refractive index model of dusty plasma is derived, which can provide a theoretical basis for reconstructing the key parameters of them by optical computerized tomography (OCT) diagnosis. In the visible and infrared regions, the feasibility of the simplified model is proved by the theoretical and accuracy verifications. And, the results manifest that the relative error between the simplified and theoretical contribution of dust particles is within 1.2%. In further, three reported practical dusty plasma examples are introduced for verification, which proves that the relative error between the simplified refractive index model and the original refractive index could be guaranteed within 0.3% under the given parameter regions. Finally, the potential application of the simplified model in parameters’ OCT measurement is discussed.
