Abstract A FDTD numerical model is proposed in this paper for modeling the electromagnetic interactions of light with gain medium characterized by a semi-quantum system of 6 discrete energy levels. The whole system is represented by 3 quantum-mechanics-corrected dipole oscillators coupled with a set of corresponding rate equations used for describing the atomic transitions between different energy levels. Together with the Ampere’s Law and Faraday’s Law equations, the whole model can then be numerically discretized and implemented, allowing a quantum energy system being simulated classically. The algorithm is then applied to study a Distributed Bragg Reflector laser, and the simulated lasing characteristics agree well with laser theory.
