Abstract In this study, a faster water turbidity measurement system based on simultaneous measurement of transmitted and forward scattered light using an optical CCD line sensor is presented. The turbidity measurement results obtained at 650 nm for varying distilled and tap water-NaCl solutions are given. The impact of 10° and 90° -forward scattered light measurements on the dynamic range was also discussed using a generic transmitted/forward scattered light measurement setup. The results of the proposed CCD line sensor system were calibrated with the turbidity measurements realized using two different commercial devices measuring in NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Unit) and TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) units. The results have shown that a higher dynamic range could be obtained with 10° -forward scattered light measurements. Also, a balanced rapid water turbidity measurement for a range of 0–30 NTU was experimentally demonstrated using a single LD-CCD line sensor system.
