Abstract Photoluminescence (PL) and scintillation properties of Ce:SrY2O4 single crystals were investigated. The PL quantum yield (QY) of the 2 % Ce-doped sample was the highest, and it decreased in the high Ce concentrations samples. The undoped SrY2O4 single crystal exhibited a broad emission band at 380 nm due to host defects, and the scintillation decay time constant was about 4.2 μs. The pulse height spectrum of 137Cs γ-rays using the undoped SrY2O4 single crystal revealed the scintillation light yield of 830 photons/MeV.
