Abstract The model of controllable anomalous hollow beam (CAHB) is proposed. The analytical expression of CAHB propagating in A B C D paraxial optical systems is derived. The light intensity distribution of CAHB at the initial position can be controlled by selecting the beam parameters, and it can be divided into different types. The propagation characteristics of CAHB in free space, such as the transverse intensity patterns, the on-axis light intensity and the evolution of beam width are analyzed in detail by means of mathematical analysis. Numerical simulations are also performed to show these propagation characteristics. We focus on the propagation properties of several typical CAHB with different central and transverse intensity distributions through parameter control.
