Abstract A series of lanthanum vanadate doped with Ho3+ was synthesized via the sol-gel method. All the synthesized samples were found to have a monoclinic crystal structure with crystallite sizes ranging from 14 - 28 nm. Morphological studies showed the presence of spherical particles. The band gap of LaVO4 doped with 3 mol% Ho3+ ions was estimated to be 3.63 eV. The photoluminescence excitation spectra showed broad excitation bands in the 290-350 nm range related to charge transfer along with some narrow and sharp peaks in the longer wavelength region. Green emission at around 545 nm was realized along with relatively low red emission at 655 nm.
