Abstract This work assesses the dependence of the refractive index of a one-dimensional photonic crystal composed of SiO2 and Si on its applied pressure. Therefore, the Transfer Matrix Method is used to calculate its transmittance spectrum. After breaking the structure periodicity, we found the photonic band gaps of a defect mode, which may be tuned by increasing the external pressure applied. In addition, we reported that when increasing pressure, and depending on the layer arrangement within the crystal, we can maximize the energy stored by the defect mode through quality factor measurements.
