Abstract We study the crystal field and Racah’s parameters of glass system containing constant NiO content. Glass composition 20SiO2 + 54B2O3 + 1NiO+Z Bi2O3 + (25-Z) BaO, where Z = 5, 10, 15 and 20 (mol%) was produced via the melt quenching method. Optical properties were studied in terms of absorption spectra in the UV-Vis-IR range. The optical absorption coefficient of Ni2+ showed various absorption bands. These bands were employed to find the crystal field splitting (10Dq) and Racah’s parameters (B and C). We gain an insight into the glass structure and give conclusions about the correlation of glass inter-atomic separation and 10Dq. The values 10Dq were found to decrease with increasing inter-atomic separation, while an opposite behavior was observed for, B.
