Abstract The role of the interaction of gas molecules with a surface on the drag force, thermophoretic force and velocity of a spherical aerosol particle, as well as its thermal polarization, are studied under the conditions of a free molecule regime. Expressions for these physical quantities are obtained for an arbitrary scattering kernel. Calculations are carried out using various scattering-kernel models.
