Abstract The isothermal section of the Fe-Sn-Ti ternary system at 873 K was investigated over the whole composition range using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive spectrometer. Three ternary compounds Fe 2 SnTi, Fe 5 Sn 9 Ti 6 and FeSnTi 2 were observed. The crystal structure of FeSnTi 2 is solved (Pearson symbol hP18, space group P 6 ( _ ) 2 m) and Fe 5 Sn 9 Ti 6 is a cubic structured ternary compound (Pearson symbol cF116, space group Fm 3 ( _ ) m). The compound FeSnTi was found to have a hexagonal structure (Pearson symbol hP6, space group P 6 3 mc ) in the as-cast sample and the 1273 K annealed sample rather than the reported cubic half-Heusler structure.
