Abstract The pure NiO and various concentrations of Nd3+ ions doped NiO (0.01M, 0.02M and 0.03M) nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction pattern revealed that the synthesized nanoparticles exhibit cubic structure of NiO. The average crystallite sizes are found to be 43 nm, 34 nm, 31 nm and 28 nm for pure NiO and Nd doped NiO nanoparticles respectively. The XPS spectra conformed that the information about oxidation state of Ni (2p), O (1s) and Nd (3d) state for NiO and Ni0.98Nd0.02O nanoparticles. FESEM showed NiO NPs were in nanoflower structure. EDAX spectra used to identify and confirmed the elemental composition of synthesized nanoparticles. The Ni-O stretching vibrations were observed by FT-IR spectra, at 417, 415, 417 and 412 cm−1 for NiO and Nd doped NiO nanoparticles respectively. UV–Vis absorption spectra showed the absorption peak edge at 346, 299, 329 and 295 nm for NiO and various concentrations of Nd3+ ions (0.01M, 0.02M and 0.03M) doped NiO nanoparticles respectively. Magnetic behavior was studied in room temperature as a function of various Nd doping concentrations. In order to explore new strategies to identify and develop the next generation of drugs or agents to control bacterial infections and causes against the antibacterial studies showed that NiO and Nd doped NiO NPs possessed a greater antibacterial effect than the commercial antibiotic (Erythromycin). The NiO and Nd doped NiO NPs could be used in the treatment of pneumonia, bloodstream infection, kidney failure; wound infection and urinary tract infections.
