Abstract A new mixed valence material PbNi 3 (PO 4 ) 3 was synthesized by high-temperature solid state reaction. The structure consists of 3D framework constructed by NiO 6 octahedra and PO 4 tetrahedra, forming 2D channels in which Pb ions are located inside. Magnetic measurements are consistent with the structural feature, confirming the presence of mixed valence Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ ions with the ratio of 2:1 in the expected spin-lattice. Two successive magnetic transitions are observed at low-temperature, in which a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering occurs at ∼15 K and ferrimagnetic-like ordering occurs at ∼4 K.
