Abstract TiO2 hollow microspheres composed of nanoparticles, mesoporous nanospheres and nanowires were prepared via a similar hydrothermal approach and following treatment. The presence of NH3·H2O and hydrothermal treatment in NaOH solution could change the structures of primary nanobuilding blocks in hollow microspheres, but the main hollow structures maintained. All the hollow microspheres were tested as photocatalysts and exhibited superior photocatalytic performance. It is found that the abilities of charge separation and transport for the hollow microspheres are significantly depended on the structures of primary nanobuilding blocks.
