Abstract The objective of this research is to investigate the dynamic flow behavior of Ti-5553 alloy at elevated temperatures using Crystal plasticity and Johnson-Cook (J-C) models. Compression tests were carried out at different temperatures of 25 °C, 200 °C, 400 °C and 600 °C at various strain rates of 0.01–2000/s. A physically-based Modified Crystal plasticity model was then adopted to describe the flow behavior in the Work hardening (WH)-Dynamic recovery (DRV) regime in conjunction with Arrhenius equation. The model well established the flow behavior of the titanium alloy, mainly the strain hardening and thermal softening effects. Microstructural study has also been undertaken. The mechanisms of dynamic recrystallization and adiabatic shear bands are discussed. Numerical simulations were carried out using the ABAQUS/Explicit code. The developed crystal plasticity model was implemented in ABAQUS using user sub-routine UMAT.
