To the Editor: Translational research is an interdisciplinary branch of the biomedical field that is supported by 3 main pillars: benchside, bedside, and community.1 Translation of aging research has become increasingly relevant due to the high prevalence of chronic diseases coupled with population aging.2 The “big 4” medical journals with the highest impact factor, that is, New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), Lancet, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and British Medical Journal (BMJ), are widely regarded as the most influential in the field of internal medicine.3 Of 27 landmark articles that most advanced the practice of geriatric medicine as identified by Vaughan et al,4 23 were published in one of these big-4 journals. In contrast, Morley et al5 reported more than 2 decades ago that most general medical journals do not reflect the demographically driven geriatric imperative of population aging.5 Using the translational science framework, this scoping review aimed to map trends in prevalence of translational stage and funding of geriatricsrelated research that were published in the big-4 over the past decade.
