Abstract The site 17 in Brzezie, com. Klaj, is one of the few examples of entirely excavated settlements of the Linear Pottery Culture (LBK). Thanks to this, it was possible to recognise the building rules applied by their inhabitants. The excavations delivered a great amount of data for specialised studies. This article aimed to present botanical data relating to utilisation of plant materials contained within constructional elements of houses built by the Early Neolithic communities, and was mostly based on plant remains preserved in Brzezie, discussed against the background of the LBK settlement in south-eastern Poland. A typical construction encountered at every settlement in this region, including the settlement in Brzezie, was a long overground, post frame house. From the features uncovered at this site abundant plant remains and their imprints were obtained. The relics of burnt houses were especially valuable in this respect. Thanks to archaeobotanical analysis, many interesting information was gathered referring to the production of individual structural elements of houses and the duration of their occupation, as well as the abundance and diversity of plant materials used for construction.
