Abstract Urban mass transit system plays a critical role in improving accessibility for all urban users, it balances social, economic, and environmental goals through effective cooperation governance of different stakeholders. With the rapid urbanization how urban residents play important roles in urban mass transit governance has become an important issue in the urban sustainable governance globally. The main goal of this study is to analyze the self-awareness and behavior of the public in maintaining public order and social responsibility in urban mass transit governance and provide valuable experiences for theoretical and empirical researches on sustainable urban governance. Thus, 1695 valid questionnaires and 8107 observation samples were collected in Shanghai subway system. The variable framework included 15 specific variables involving social attributes, self-awareness, and behaviors of passengers. To improve the understanding of the correlation between data features and variables, this study focuses on descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The results demonstrated that the variables of self-awareness and behavior are positively associated with public participation. Diversity and difference in observation analysis contributed to the further exploration of how to improve the situation of public order and social responsibility. Finally, the study concluded that urban mass transit governance requires joint efforts of the urban residents in self-awareness and behavioral aspects. Full consideration must be given to how to enhance the participation positivity of the public and strengthen their social responsibility to further optimize institutions.
