Abstract Point sources account for a majority of anthropogenic activity emissions for polluting gases and greenhouse gases. Traditionally, the bottom-up method relies on emission inventories to estimate point source emission, which suffers from inaccurate reports and poor timeliness. In this study, a novel method was proposed on the basis of the interior point penalty function (IPPF) to obtain point source emission with high accuracy and efficiency. Actual measurements in Prairie grass emission experiment were used to test the performance of the IPPF model, which showed only 0.5 g/s difference from the reported emission (91.1 g/s). This proposed model would play important role in developing environmental policies.
