Abstract A facile method to synthesize the magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) particles with petal-like morphology was proposed. In this method, we firstly used the sulfate ions as the additives to control Mg(OH)2 particle morphology. The effects of operation parameters, such as reaction temperature, type and concentration of the additives on morphology of Mg(OH)2 particles were investigated. The synthesized sample was thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area measurement (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV–Visible spectra, and particle size distribution. The possible growth mechanism of petal assembly was also discussed for the Mg(OH)2 particles.
