Abstract A new formula is proposed for predicting the shear performance of steel-jacketed, cylindrical concrete columns. It was developed based on tests of a new type of steel-jacketed column, but it is shown to outperform existing design methods in predicting the strength of conventional columns as well. The special columns tested were constructed by stacking precast segments (PSs) inside the steel jacket, then infilling the voids with post-pouring concrete (PPC). The precast segments were cast incorporating demolished concrete lumps (DCLs). Thirty-four such columns were tested in the laboratory under combined shear and axial loading. The data confirm that such columns perform almost the same as a traditional concrete-filled steel tube. The shear span ratio is the most critical determinant of their shear capacity and ductility. The complete set of test results are reported.
