Abstract Skin is a complex organ with the primary function of protecting the internal tissue or cells from the external environment. In order to replicate the skin with ideal mechanical properties, special attention towards the biocompatibility and biodegradability is necessary. Whereas, in contrast to other living organisms humans has shown limited tissue regeneration owing to their variation in the genetics. Moreover, in recent years, hydrogel scaffolds are being explored for skin tissue repair and regeneration because of their ability to self-renew and proliferate the specific cell types involved in skin tissue regeneration. In this review, we outline about the natural and synthetic polymers and their potential for enhancing the applications of the polymeric hydrogel scaffolds. Further we also examined the smart healing property of the peptides and growth factors loaded hydrogel scaffolds in skin tissue regeneration.
