Abstract The symmetric and asymmetric electrodes made of mild steel were investigated in 4000 ppm NaCl + 1000 ppm NaNO2 solution at different pH values (4, 6, 8 and 10). The obtained electrochemical current noise (ECN) signals were analyzed by statistical and wavelet techniques. The results indicated that the asymmetric electrodes were more suitable than symmetric electrodes for the ECN measurements in near-neutral and alkaline solutions. The asymmetric configuration led to increase the ECN detection and to determine the actual time scale of the predominant transients directly from the maximum peak in their SDPS plot.
