Abstract This study attempts to highlight the effect of the old parent concrete and the crushing level on the morphological properties and surface texture of the obtained recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Three different crushed RCAs were studied: concrete made from crushed natural limestone aggregate, concrete made of RCA and concrete made from rubberized concrete. In addition, one natural crushed limestone aggregate source was used as a reference. Two techniques were used, indirect methods and visual techniques. The visual moire technique has been used to qualitatively visualize the 3-D particle morphological aspects and its surface texture while the image projection 2-D technique was used to determine the angularity of the aggregate particles. The following properties: angularity number, index of aggregate particle shape and texture were measured using the indirect method. The shape and texture of RCA were found to be mainly influenced by the quality of the original parent concrete and the crushing level. The visual moire analysis results indicated that the differences in surface texture among aggregates from different parent sources can be easily distinguished. The attached mortar on the surface of RCA and the crushing level were likely found to influence the shape and roughness of aggregates from different parent concrete.
