Abstract Fluoride, the anion with the smallest ionic radius is absorbed easily by the human body, and its excess accumulation can cause serious health problems. Therefore, there is continuous research on developing novel analytical methods for the monitoring of fluoride ion contamination. From the last few decades, significant research has been done to develop fluoride ion selective fluorogenic and chromogenic chemosensors because of their high sensitivity, low-cost and simplicity. This review was narrated to compile the fluoride ion selective quinones based fluorogenic and chromogenic chemosensors. The designing of sensors, sensing mechanisms along with other promising analytical features are summarized and discussed.
