Abstract The novel Bi 3+ /Ln 3+ :LuVO 4 (Ln = Eu, Sm, Dy, Ho) nanocrystals are successfully fabricated by a facile and mixed hydrothermal method. With 10 mol% Bi 3+ doping into the LuVO 4 nanocrystal, the Ln 3+ excitation band could be diverted from 293 nm to 346 nm, attributing to the dominant of Bi 3+ - V 5+ metal–metal charge transfer instead of O 2- to V 5+ within VO 4 group before doping. Under 346 nm excitation, the as-prepared nanophosphors yield intense multicolor emissions. The emission color of Bi 3+ /Ln 3+ :LuVO 4 nanophosphors can be tuned through adjusting the doping Ln 3+ ions. They may find potential applications as white light-emitting diode materials in color display field.
