Abstract The effect of an electric field with different polarities on the inner wall of a submerged entry nozzle made of rare earth steel was investigated. The results show that the electric field induces a change in the decarburization, erosion, and clogging processes of the nozzle. In the casting of rare earth steel, the negative electric field affects the decarburization, erosion, and clogging of the nozzle. Moreover, when a reverse positive electric field is applied on the wall of the submerged entry nozzle, these processes can be effectively reduced. This ensures the integrity of the submerged entry nozzle and its smooth production during the continuous casting process.
