Abstract In the present work, we reported the anomalous dependence of magnetic and magnetocaloric properties on the composition of Gd-Ni binary amorphous alloys. The Gd-Ni binary amorphous ribbons are obtained within a compositional range Gd63Ni37 to Gd71Ni29. By measuring the thermal properties and magnetization curves of the amorphous alloys, glass forming ability (GFA) and magnetic entropy change (−ΔSm) curves were determined. It was found that in contrast to most of the other alloy systems, both the Curie temperature (Tc) and the maximum −ΔSm (−ΔSmpeak) do not change obviously with the alloy composition of the Gd-Ni amorphous alloys. The mechanism for the compositional dependence of Tc as well as −ΔSmpeak of the Gd-Ni amorphous alloys was investigated.
