Abstract To improve the mechanical properties of non-alkali glass substrate for display devices, B2O3-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO-SrO-MgF2 glass system was chosen and crystallized in this work. The effect of different nucleation-crystallization processes on the structure and properties of the glass and glass-ceramics was systemically studied. The results show the glass-ceramics have better properties than the parent glass due to the precipitation of cordierite, which do not only have higher mechanical strengths and Vickers hardness, but also lower densities. Most importantly, with the optimum nucleation-crystallization schedule (825 °C/10 h + 930 °C/9 h), the mechanical properties of the glass-ceramic are greatly improved (compressive strength of 702 MPa; bending strength of 265 MPa; Vickers hardness of 8.5 GPa). Besides, a lower density (2.495 g/cm3) and a high transmittance (81%) in the visible range can also be obtained. This work will provide a significant guidance for improving the mechanical properties of non-alkali glass substrates for display devices.
