Abstract A series of CaO-CaF2-Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2-xCeO2-ySm2O3 glass were designed and prepared to investigate and reveal the influence of Sm2O3 and CeO2 on the structure, luminescence and color of samples. It is shown that all the samples have glassy non-crystalline nature, high transparency and excellent dispersion of dopants. The quenching concentration of Sm2O3 is 1.0 mol%, which results from the dipole-dipole interactions. Furthermore, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of codoped samples show the characteristic transitions both assigned to Ce3+ and Sm3+ ions under excitation of 373 nm, realizing the combined color of blue and red in one host. Meanwhile, the PL intensity belongs to Ce3+ and Sm3+ ions varied with the Ce/Sm ratio, which indicates the energy transfer between Ce3+ and Sm3+ ion. In a word, the O/R ratio, fluorescence lifetime, CIE chromatic coordinates, and luminescence color of Ce/Sm co-doped samples are controllable and adjustable by the Ce/Sm ratio.
