Abstract The stacking fault energy (SFE) plays an important role in deformation behavior and radiation damage of FCC metals and alloys such as austenitic stainless steels. In the present communication, existing expressions to calculate SFE in those steels from chemical composition are reviewed and an improved multivariate linear regression with random intercepts is used to analyze a new database of 144 SFE measurements collected from 30 literature references. It is shown that the use of random intercepts can account for experimental biases in these literature references. A new expression to predict SFE from austenitic stainless steel compositions is proposed.
