The relationship between headache and pregnancy is important; primary headaches (migraine or tensiontype headaches) are more common in women and are a common complaint in pregnancy and during reproductive years. Pregnancy has been a common exclusion criterion in controlled trials, with little evidence-based treatment recommendations. Acetaminophen is the drug most commonly used during pregnancy, with no evidence of teratogenicity. Second-line medications are more controversial, either raising concern for safety during pregnancy or having questionable effectiveness for treatment of headaches in pregnancy.
