Abstract Owing to high chemical and thermal stability, ionic character, low nucleophilicity and peculiar solubility, cobalt bis(dicarbollide) anion occupies a unique position among the metallacarboranes. Derivatives of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) find applications in different areas such as in the treatment of nuclear waste, conducting polymers and medicinal chemistry. In this paper, we have presented an overview of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) anion and its derivatives.
