To characterize achieving a decarbonized global energy system as "challenging" is a heroic understatement. One key challenge is doing this globally, for countries with wildly diverse energy resource options and varying levels of existing infrastructure and societal readiness to support low-carbon energy systems. Another important challenge is decarbonizing all economic sectors, not just single sectors (e.g., transportation or electric power).
