Although solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation is an important factor in battery performance, difficulties in characterizing the SEI mean that it is still not well understood. In this issue of Joule, Nanda and coworkers utilize tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to paint a more complete picture of the SEI on silicon electrodes.
