Abstract The effect of external direct current electric field on the inhibition behavior of cyclohexylamine and sodium nitrite under simulated atmospheric environments with thin electrolyte layers was investigated by surface characterizations and electrochemical measurements. Results confirmed that the vertical electric field from top to bottom increased the inhibition efficiency of cyclohexylamine but decreased that of sodium nitrite. The opposite electric field weakened the inhibition efficiency of cyclohexylamine but enhanced that of sodium nitrite. Surface analysis indicated that the external vertical electric field can affect the migration of inhibitors under thin electrolyte layers.
