Abstract Ce doped Bi2O4 thin films were successfully dip coated on crown glass substrate by the sol–gel route. The effects of Ce dopant percentage on the film structure and properties were discussed. Bi2O4 thin films were characterized by several techniques. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra of thin films annealed at 450oC exhibit monoclinic Bi2O4 phase with good crystallinity. The transmission spectra show a red-shift behavior with an increase in Ce dopant percentage. The antibacterial activities of the Ce doped Bi2O4 are probed against four bacterial strains. S. Aureus is a gram-positive bacterial strain while Pseudomonas Aeruginosa (P. Aeruginosa), Klebsiella Pneumoniae (K. Pneumoniae) are gram-negative bacterial strains. These films have a good potential for UV blocking and antibacterial activity. The frequency-dependent AC conductivity decreases by increasing the concentration of Ce dopant in Bi2O4.
