Highlights • A large number (n > 13,000) of cross-country skiers participate in the Vasaloppet every year.• Males have a more even pacing than females in cross-country skiing, which contrasts with findings in studies of marathon running.• Fast cross-country skiers adopt a more even pacing than their slower counterparts, which is in agreement with observations in other endurance sports.
