Abstract A series of Mo2C coated by nitrogen and sulfur codoped carbon (Mo2C@NSC) were prepared by temperature-programmed carbonization of ionic liquid in a N2/H2 atmosphere. Molybdenum carbide was highly dispersed on NSC and its average size was 3.1 nm when the precursor was carbonized at 800 °C. Using Mo2C@NSC-800 as a catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2, the 90.5% selectivity to methanol and 0.405 gMeOH/gcat/h space time yield of methanol with CO2 conversion of more than 16% were given under the optimal reaction conditions. And the catalytic reaction could run more than 100 h on stream and not deteriorate in the fixed bed reactor.
