Objectives: Patients living with chronic medical conditions (CMC) are more likely to become severely ill from COVID-19. It is crucial for them to access to the vaccination. The aim of this study is to assess opinions and attitudes of CMC patients towards the COVID-19 vaccination. Methods: This observational, cross-sectional study was conducted online on the Carenity platform from March 10 to May 31, 2021. It includes adult patients from France, the UK, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the US living with any CMC. Results: 4,620 CMC patients were included, 73% women, mean age of 56 years old, and most frequently affected by type 2 diabetes (16%) and multiple sclerosis (13%). 74% of patients consider themselves to be at risk, and 57% of them have taken additional health precautions. 55% of respondents have been advised by their doctor to be vaccinated because of their CMC. 42% of patients are already vaccinated: 86% in the UK, 20% in Spain. Of those not vaccinated, 87% do not know when they will be vaccinated. 30% in the US and 48% in Europe are looking forward to getting vaccinated. 65% do not think that they will be able to resume normal life once vaccinated. In the vaccinated group, 60% of US patients feel less concerned by the pandemic now that they are vaccinated, while 33% in Europe. 76% of the unvaccinated are worried about the possible vaccine side effects, compared with 37% in the vaccinated group. 54% of patients were unable to express their concerns about vaccination to a healthcare provider. 67% agree with the introduction of a vaccine passport. Conclusions: Most of the chronic patients interviewed are vaccinated or looking forward to being vaccinated. It is important to encourage healthcare professionals to support and inform chronic patients who are still reluctant, particularly because of the risk of side effects.
