Abstract In this study, rod-shaped LPSO was obtained by heat treatment, and the effect of LPSO morphology on the degradation properties of Mg-7.2Y-2.8Ni alloys was investigated. Mg-7.2Y-2.8Ni alloys mainly consisted of α-Mg and LPSO, and the distribution of LPSO was changed from continuous network to disordered rod-shaped after heat treatment. The results showed that the formation of rod-shaped LPSO not only increased the average degradation rate by 27% but also increased the elongation. The tensile strength and elongation of the annealed alloys reached 280 MPa and 21.8% respectively.
