Abstract We aim to focus on the physical and optical properties of a new group of xPr2O3–75PbO–10B2O3-(15-x) TeO2 glasses based on the impact of R.E oxide used in the matrix. XRD measurements reveal that the investigated glasses are amorphous. Results show that due to the dual role played by PbO and the effect of R.E ions present in the matrix, variations in the value of physical parameters were observed. An increase in the optical band gap energy is due to the formation of bridging oxygen, and hence the value of R.I decreases. Oxide ion polarizability and optical basicity are found to decrease with increasing mole% of R.E ions. Optical transmission increases but reflection loss is found to decrease with R.E ion concentration. Metallization parameter values confirmed that investigated samples are amorphous materials (M1
