Abstract Samples of Y 1-x Ba x BO 3 with nominal compositions 0 ≤ × ≤ 0.3 have been prepared using coprecipitation method. Phase composition, crystal structure, microstructure and electrical properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Additionally, Differential Thermal Analysis and Thermogravimetry coupled with Mass Spectrometry (DTA–TG–MS) allowed to propose the mechanism of chemical reactions during synthesis process. Phase composition of the obtained materials depends on the amount of barium dopant and the preparation conditions. The dependence of lattice parameters on Ba content was also found, indicating the incorporation of Ba into the YBO 3 lattice. SEM results showed grain growth and formation of microcracks due to Ba doping. The determined electrical properties as a function of temperature and gas atmosphere indicated the possibility of protonic conductivity in the YBO 3 – based materials. The influence of Ba on electrical properties has been interpreted basing on the results of XRD and SEM methods.
