Abstract Non-centrosymmetric borates K 7 CaY 2 (B 5 O 10 ) 3 have been synthesized by solid state reaction and the crystals were successfully grown by the top seeded solution growth method using K 2 O-B 2 O 3 -CaF 2 flux. According to the single X-ray diffraction, the structure belongs to the R 32 space group with lattice parameters aā€‰=ā€‰13.2516(2) A and cā€‰=ā€‰14.9679(3) A. IR, Raman, absorption spectra as well as data on melting temperature were obtained for the crystal. The short edge of UV absorption and SHG intensity comparable with KH 2 PO 4 (KDP) suggests that this crystal is a promising nonlinear-optical material.
