Abstract Open-cell phosphoric acid-based geopolymer foams with a homogeneous microstructure were synthesized by frothing using Triton X-100 as surfactant. When conducting the geopolymerization in a closed environment at 75 °C for 24 h, the frothing route enabled the production of geopolymer foams with a total porosity of ~78.3 vol%, open porosity as high as ~76.8 vol%, and possessing a compressive strength of ~0.64 MPa.
