Abstract A novel noble metal/semiconductor heterostructure Au/Bi 12 O 17 Cl 2 composite was synthesized by a facile photoreduction method. The surface loaded low content of Au nanoparticles broadened the visible light absorption of Bi 12 O 17 Cl 2 . The photocurrent measurement indicates that the Au nanoparticles tightly inlayed on the surface of Bi 12 O 17 Cl 2 quickly captured the electrons from Bi 12 O 17 Cl 2 substrate and resulted in high separation efficiency of photocharges under visible light (λ > 400 nm). Moreover, Au/Bi 12 O 17 Cl 2 composite displayed largely enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity for methyl orange and phenol in comparison with the single Bi 12 O 17 Cl 2 substrate. The novel Au/Bi 12 O 17 Cl 2 is a potential noble metal/semiconductor candidate for efficiently eliminating organic pollutants in wastewater.
