Abstract Novel butterfly-like Ag 2 MoO 4 nanosheets (NSs) have been synthesized with the assistance of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at room temperature. The morphology, chemical composites, phase and optical property of as-synthetic Ag 2 MoO 4  NSs are systematically tested by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The photocatalytic activity and stability are evaluated by degradating methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The results demonstrate that the apparent pseudo-first-order rate constant K app of Ag 2 MoO 4  NSs is 0.05846 min −1 , which is 13.8 times higher than that of P25 TiO 2 . Furthermore, a possible mechanism of photocatalytic process is proposed.
