Abstract The spectroscopic properties of the Pr-doped CaF2 crystals are investigated. The photoluminescence intensity in the visible region is drastically enhanced by co-doping Gd3+ ions in Pr:CaF2 crystal. Furthermore, relative emission intensities of the 484 nm, 598 nm and 642 nm emission lines are greatly improved. Continuous-wave laser oscillation of Pr, Gd:CaF2 crystal at ∼642 nm is realized at room temperature, for the first time to our knowledge. The highest output power of 22.2 mW is achieved with a slope efficiency of 7.5%.
