Abstract Ag3VO4/AgI composites with different Ag3VO4/AgI molar ratios were prepared by sequential precipitation. These composites were more active than Ag3VO4 and AgI in photodegradation of aqueous dyes and tetracycline hydrochloride under visible irradiation. Ag3VO4/AgI with an Ag3VO4/AgI molar ratio of 1/20 showed the highest photocatalytic activity and good recyclability. The improved photocatalytic activity of Ag3VO4/AgI can be attributed to the efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. A possible photocatalytic mechanism is proposed.
