Abstract Owing to the excellent mechanical properties and toughness of bainite steels, bainite is regarded as a desirable microstructure for new-generation high-strength weathering steels. In this work, high-strength weathering steels with different N/C ratios were developed using a bainite matrix and co-precipitation of nanoscale precipitates. The precipitation pathway and mechanism of co-precipitation were studied by microstructure observation. The tensile test experimental results showed that the yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation of the steel with 0.036% C and 0.036% N are higher than 550 MPa, 650 MPa, and 20%, respectively, which satisfy the design goals for mechanical properties in the new high-strength weathering steels.
