Abstract We herein report green synthesis of water-soluble AgInS2 (AIS) quantum dots (QDs) for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA). The optical analysis showed that addition of AA increased the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of the QDs by suppressing the surface defects via the chelating action of AA. The relationship between the PL intensity and AA concentration was found to be linear over a range of 0.66 μM–99 μM. The AIS QDs exhibited excellent limit of detection (LOD = 26 nM) and can be employed as optical sensor for rapid detection of AA in aqueous solutions.
